I am a teacher. Actually, I am a special education teacher. Generally I love what I do. I just hate this time of year. In January, New York State requires us to administer what is called the ELA Test. It is given to all students in grades 3-8 and measures their ability to read, write and listen. Every year at this time we give the test...and every year at this time I feel like a complete and total failure. My students typically bomb! That's not saying much about my ability to teach is it? The problem is the test usually contains passages written above the grade level it is administered to. For the most part the students I work with have reading difficulties. It is the reason they come to me...the reason they have Individualized Education Plans. Yet the state feels they not only have to take it, they expect them to pass it as well. So I have to sit there and watch the students I have become very attached to and protective of struggle through a test written 1-2 years above grade level knowing full well their reading level is 1-2 levels below grade level. Like I said...they typically don't do well. What this test doesn't measure are the small accomplishments I celebrate with them every day. The smile I see creep across the face of a 10 year old boy who just realized he read the entire sentence without any help. The increased confidence that comes with knowing they are improving (even if it is at a slower rate than their friends). The pride that comes with being called on and giving the correct answer. I prefer to celebrate BABY STEPS!!

If only all teachers saw their work they way you do. You are a special teacher and person. The picture is beautiful esp. in the context of the story :)
What an amazing post AND picture!!
If you guys weren't required to administer tests every time you turned around it might be a little easier for your children to make progress because you could devote that time to do what it is you're suppose to do. Sorry, don't mean to rant. I am just really bothered by all the standardized exams that are given now. You should be proud of what you do, it isn't easy and certainly not everyone can do it. =)
At any rate, the photo's great. V. cute and artsy.
Thanks for the comments guys! They mean a lot to me! Rachel...I couldn't have said it better myself! :)
I love the picture and the post. I think that even though you may feel discouraged and like a failure at times, what you are doing is one of the most important things. One day all of those kids will look back at some moment in their life and remember you as the teacher that made a difference in their lives.
Loved your post!! I so admire you and what you do. Thank you for being such a special person!
Your photo is great. Love the emotion it evokes. Great conversion.
Wow, your story is heart touching. The shoes just made it even more touching. Keep up the great work! with photography AND teaching!
Great story and I love the way the photo is a symbol. Awesome!
Teacher here too! Totally agree! Great Photo and post!
I love this photo...perfect in B&W. I sympathize with you . I was a teacher before a mommy, and my students were all second-language learners. Assessment/testing time was very frustrating both for the students and teachers. Hang in there!
This just shows you really care about the well being of these little minds. I wish there were so many more like you. BTW love the photo!
Wow. That sounds very discouraging :(
But I love your photo! Great, and so profound with the journaling!
i love this picture it is so cute and what a true statement too. my mom is a teacher (she has had the resource class for the past two years) and i know she gets frustrated sometimes that her kids are required to "know" the same stuff as the other kids.
I really like this photo, and I really enjoyed reading the post, too. :)
Great shot! The composition and conversion is wonderful and I am so loving the grain.
One of the reasons I got out of teaching was the standardized testing. Thank you for sticking with it and making a difference. You are improving lives daily. :)
